Mentorship

Capital Region Female Minor Hockey Association is committed to promoting and encouraging our athlete’s participation in citizenship and mentorship initiatives in our community. We also provide development opportunities for leadership roles including administration, coaching and officiating. More than a sporting association, we are building a player centered community.

Mentorship

Players in the U15-U21 divisions are provided opportunities to support participants in try hockey programs such as the NHL/NHLPA First Shift and ESSO Fun Days. We assign “player coaches'' to program participants to work one-on-one with them. This exposes the older players to a coaching environment while being mentored by on-ice certified coaches. For program participants, they are well supported during their first hockey experience and enjoy the comradery with the older player. For the player coaches, the time dedicated can be credited toward school requirements and it is a great experience to share on a resume.

Our Board of Directors welcomes young women to gain meaningful experience and offer valuable perspectives for our Association. We have many Directors who are non-parents, early in their academic and professional careers who serve on our Board.

We encourage and actively recruit female coaches. For those who are new to those roles, we pair them with a more experienced coach so they are supported and mentored through their first seasons of coaching. CRFMA does the same with officials, actively seeking our girls and women to these roles.

CRFHMA is thrilled to be hosting an NHL/NHLPA First Shift program.

We are looking for "player coaches" to work one-on-one with our brand new hockey players. Ideally you can commit to all six weeks, our program will be in Fall 2023.  Sessions are one hour long, held once a week on the same day and time. If you are interested in participating, please email recruitment@crfmha.ca to sign up.

Should you decide to participate, here are the certification and equipment requirements from BC Hockey. On Ice Helper Chart Update 2020-11-18.pdf (bchockey.net)

On-Ice Helper Guidelines

The following guidelines are in place for on-ice helpers; The On-Ice Helper Chart is provided to assist in ensuring all on-ice helpers are compliant with policies and expectations of the insurance program:

1.   Any on-ice helpers must be a current registered member of BC Hockey / Hockey Canada. If the individual is not currently registered through a BC Hockey Member or as an Associate Member, the Hockey Canada Registry (HCR) needs to be updated to include this person on the roster as a “volunteer” with the team(s).

2.   Any helper, 16 years and older must take Respect in Sport. Additionally, the helper must be under the direct supervision of the certified team officials. Concussion Awareness Training Tool is not mandatory for on-ice helpers.

3.   Non-members offering coaching or other on-ice help for a fee are not volunteers, and therefore, must become a BC Hockey Associate Member prior to participation. Any person working in this capacity should not be rostered with a Minor Hockey Association (MHA).

4.   MHAs are not to create “Volunteer” teams within the HCR for volunteers or executive members who do not participate in on-ice activities with the registered participants.

5.   Application form for Criminal Record Check can be obtained at the following link   http://www.bchockey.net/Content.aspx?id=301
